Do’s and Dont’s in Floor Cleaning
12th June 2023

Timber and vinyl flooring can add warmth, beauty, and sophistication to any home or business. However, proper cleaning is crucial for maintaining the appearance and longevity of these surfaces. Here are some essential do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when cleaning your timber and vinyl floors:

DO:

  1. Sweep or vacuum regularly: Regular sweeping or vacuum cleaning is essential to remove dust and dirt. The grit and grime can cause wear and tear on the floors and form scratches if not removed promptly.

  1. Blot spills immediately: In case of any spillage on the floor, blot the liquid with a clean, dry towel immediately. Don’t let the spill sit on the floor for too long, as it can cause permanent staining.

  1. Use a damp mop: Damp mopping is an excellent way to keep the floors clean without damaging the surface. Mix a gentle cleaner with water and use a microfiber mop to clean the floors.

  1. Use compatible cleaning solutions: Read the manufacturer’s recommendations carefully to avoid using incompatible cleaning solutions that can cause damage to the floor. Choose a cleaning solution that’s suitable for vinyl or timber floors. Often a pH Neutral floor cleaner is the most effective cleaning solution for most flooring types that won’t do more harm than good.

  1. Test cleaning solutions before use: Before using any cleaning product/mixture, test it on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it does not cause damage or staining.

DON’T:

  1. Don’t use harsh chemicals: Avoid using harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or scrubbers on your timber or vinyl floors. They can cause damage, discoloration, or scratches.

  1. Don’t saturate the floor while cleaning: Don’t apply too much water or cleaning solution while cleaning timber or vinyl floors. Excessive moisture can cause swelling, buckling, or warping in timber floors, and damage the glue that holds vinyl floors together.

  1. Don’t use steam cleaning: Avoid using steam cleaning methods on timber or vinyl floors. The high temperature and moisture level of the steam can cause damage to the floor, swelling, or buckling.

  1. Don’t use waxes or polishes: Avoid using waxes or polishes on vinyl floors. They can create a slippery surface and reduce traction, making them more prone to accidents. It can also lead to a build-up of the wax or polish that will require removing in the future.

  1. Don’t scratch the floor: Never use abrasive materials, scrubbers or sported sponges when cleaning your timber or vinyl floors. It can cause visible scratches across the flooring surface.

Following these simple do’s and don’ts can help you ensure that your timber and vinyl floors remain in great condition for many years to come. Remember, correct cleaning and maintenance practices are essential to keep your floors looking brand-new and extend their life.
